She is a storyteller of forgotten and neglected histories of the African Diaspora, with special emphasis on the early history of Pennsylvania. Her workshop, Historytelling, integrates archival research, folk heritage, and oral history to demonstrate the role of the expressive cultural arts in creating sustainable communities. Valentine worked as a program facilitator for the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia. She also served as advisor to the curatorial team of the new Early American Art Galleries of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, opening in 2020. Valentine lived and worked in Philadelphia.
In memory of Denise Valentine.
Shortly after Trainings for the Not-Yet in Utrecht Denise Valentine passed away in Philadelphia. We will never forget her, her wisdom and stories she shared, the voice she gave to past and current struggles and her activism. Denise was one of the core artistic team of Philadelphia Assembled. A scholar museum educator and professional storyteller, a true trainer for the Not-Yet, she listened to the ancestors; now she speaks to us in turn.
